SYNRAD's sealed CO2 lasers are used in a variety of industrial processes including cutting, welding, drilling, and marking. This news brief features news and information from Synrad, and highlights some of the interesting materials and products that are processed daily by Synrad's line of CO2 lasers and marking heads

Featured Application: Laser Marking Inverted TrueType Text on Wood

By default, WinMark Pro - Synrad's laser marking software shipped with Flyer/Fenix Flyer marking heads - allows the user to fill standard TrueType® text so that the laser marks, or fills, regions inside each text character. However, for certain applications, customers may require an inverted text fill where a specific region outside the text string is marked, leaving text characters unmarked, to produce an embossed look. This process is especially helpful for creating engraved marks in materials like wood where an inverted fill creates the illusion of more apparent depth to the mark. To address this need, WinMark Pro v6 includes a new Invert Text property for marking filled TrueType (.ttf), OpenType (.otf), or PostScript (.pfm) formatted fonts.

Laser Marked Wood Sample
Inverted letters were marked on this wood sample using WinMark Pro v6's new "Invert Text" property. The inverted fill creates the illusion of added depth to the mark.

To demonstrate this new feature, a wood sample was marked twice using a company logo - one with the standard filled text option and another with the new inverted, filled text option - to illustrate the differences in visual look and mark speed. For this demonstration, we used a Synrad 25 W laser and FH Flyer marking head equipped with a 200 mm focal length lens that produces a 290 µm (0.011") focused spot size on the wood surface.

In the mark file, we created a 11.4 mm (0.45") high TrueType formatted text object, set mark Power to a duty cycle percentage equivalent to 25 watts, and set a mark Velocity of 508 millimeters per second (20 in/sec). For the standard text fill, the Text Filled property was set to Yes, and Filled Font Resolution was set to 300. For the inverted text object, Text Filled and Filled Font Resolution properties were set as described above and additionally, the Invert Text property was set to Yes and the Raster Fill Border property was set to encompass an area extending 3.8 mm (0.15") beyond the text object boundary.  When these logos were marked, the standard text fill was completed in a cycle time 16.53 seconds while the inverted text fill was completed in 41.11 seconds. The cycle time for the inverted text mark is longer simply because of the larger mark area. Although engraved depth is the same for each mark, the inverted text produces a more embossed look.

Cutting Adhesive Mylar® Tape

Mylar® adhesive tape is frequently used in processes as diverse as handling IC wafers, insulating electrical components, sealing photograph or document archives, and even for kite-making.

This application called for trepanning 10-mm diameter holes through 0.2 mm (0.008") thick adhesive-coated Mylar and a 0.05 mm (0.002") thick liner. Because future projects require intricate cuts over a small area, we selected an FH Series marking head equipped with a 125 mm focusing lens to provide XY motion. The 180-micron (0.007") spot from the FLA 125 lens covers a maximum mark field of 85 mm by 105 mm (3.4" x 4.2") with a position accuracy of 0.017 mm (0.0007").

At a power level of 60 watts and a cutting Velocity of 356 millimeters per second (14 inches/second), we cut each 10-mm diameter hole in 0.12 seconds. The Mylar tape and liner exhibits cleanly cut edges with no discoloration or dross present.

Using 60 watts of power at a speed of 14 inches per second, the Mylar tape and backing liner is cleanly cut with no discoloration or dross present.
