Marking Lacquered Aluminum Cutting Stainless Steel Tubing Cutting Foam

SYNRAD's sealed CO2 lasers are used in a variety of industrial processes including cutting, welding, drilling, and marking. This news brief showcases some of the interesting materials and products that are processed daily by Synrad's line of CO2 lasers and marking heads.

Marking Lacquered Aluminum

Sealed CO2 lasers are useful in a wide range of applications in the packaging industry. The lacquered aluminum cap in the photo on the left was marked using a Synrad 25W sealed CO2 laser and FH Series Marking Head. The cap provided clean contrasting marks using 22W of power at 35 inches per second. Focusing was through a 125mm lens that provided a 180-micron spot, with a 3mm depth of focus. The seven-character mark, 0.085 inches high, was marked in a cycle time of 0.14 seconds.

Contrasting marks were created on a lacquered aluminum cap.

Cutting Stainless Steel

This 5/8-inch diameter stainless steel tubing was cut using 240 watts of laser power. The thin-wall (0.16") material exhibited clean cuts with a slight amount of dross. A rotary stage turned the tubing at 150 RPM while a gas jet manifold holding a 2.5” positive meniscus lens focused the beam and provided oxygen at 45 PSI to assist the cutting process. Each cut required approximately two seconds to complete.

A 240W laser was used to cut stainless steel tubing, resulting in  clean cut edges with no burring

Cutting Foam Blocks

This 2.125-inch tall foam block exhibited clean cuts after being laser cut at a speed of 20 inches per minute. A 7.5-inch plano convex lens directed the 240W beam through the high-density foam. Spot size was 0.012”, and depth of focus was only 0.54”. Nitrogen at 30-PSI provided the gas assist.

Synrad lasers produced smooth edges on this foam block.
