Cut
and weld operations performed with lasers require that a compromise be
made between process speed and weld strength. Depending on the
material, applied pressure at and after the welding point can be
crucial. In this case, the polyester weave required no clamping or
pressure forces, aside from the action of an assist gas. This not only
pushed the sheets together, but also sheared the melt through the cut
to enhance joining of the material.
