Graphites ability to absorb laser energy is well known among CO2 laser users, as
this material can be used as a fairly effective beam stop. While this
high-threshold material does require at least 50 watts of power to
mark, laser marking on graphite results in well-defined, dark
contrasting marks.
The dark contrast is formed as the powder debris that is created during marking is effectively fused into the base material. In this case, the customer specified an engrave depth of approximately 0.3mm, further enhancing the contrasting effect. The engraved nature of the mark ensures good wear resistance and reduced loss of contrast through scratching of the fused debris layer.

Marked with a Synrad 50-watt laser at 2.5" per second.
