In addition to their non-contact cutting proficiency, lasers easily cut complex shapes from many different materials. The bracket shown on the left was cut from a sheet of 24-gauge (0.0235) stainless steel and even includes laser cut through-holes for mounting.
A Synrad 240 W laser focused through a 2.5 positive-meniscus lens provided the 0.004 diameter beam for cutting, while 60-PSI oxygen provided the gas assist. XY motion for the flying optics system was programmed for a linear cut speed of 75 inches per minute. Some dross is present on the cut edges. Cleanly cut edges are possible in situations where post-cut material dressing is not an option. See Applications Newsletter Issue #58 for more information.
