Welding thick plastic requires a "cut and weld" process. The plastic is penetrated by the beam, which is controlled in such a way that the interface region melts at the bottom edges of the top piece, then re-solidifies to the lower piece producing the weld. Sound clamping and adequate cooling time ensure a solid weld.
